Restoring Windows 7 Following System Crash

I recently turned on my laptop to be confronted by the blue screen of death. Following several attempts to recover the system my only option appeared to be to reboot my laptop using the boot disks. Prior to the reboot I attempted to back-up the files on my laptop but this continually failed. Therefore I resigned myself to loosing all my photos for the last 6 months (last time I backed up I'm afraid).
I have now completed the re-install of Windows 7 and I am wondering if it is possible to recover the pictures?
Not sure if this is of any use but when the laptop crashed it was running Windows 8 (an upgrade I wish I had never undertaken!).
I was stupid not to back up my files more regularly but any help would appreciated in recovering the photos.

Not likely, to probably be not worth the effort, simply as the data locations were written over with your reinstall and all the drivers, patches, etc. you had to do. If there was any still recoverable they are probably unviewable garbage because the bits have been corrupted with all this anyway. Do a search for File Recovery Freeware in Google, there is a few out there to choose from, but really not much hope since you wrote over the same space they were stored in.
