i7 950 High temp?

Hi ,

I started to notice an increase in my CPU temps,

I have an i7 950 (freezer arctic pro 7) , gigabyte UD3R mobo
I haven't attempted any overclocking yet because im not happy with current temps

I have reseated the cooler plenty of times trying different application methods for the thermal paste and none seem to affect my temps.

On idle I am running at about 50 degrees celsius and when running prime95 this jumps to around 75-80....

I know this is high and cannot think of any other reasons why other than airflow or something like that...?

I think Arctic Freezer Pro 7 is kind of weak for your cpu. i7-950 generates a lot of heat (130w tdp, & high clocked to begin with compared to its brothers 920, 930), especially when overclocking is pushed a bit. The difference in performance between small/cheap cooler vs big/expensive ones gets bigger as more heat is generated, more voltages added. I recommend that instead of wasting time to get more performance out using this cooler, get a better one, and re-apply thermal paste (with better paste, like AS5) the old fashioned way (bb size right on center). I would think Hyper212 EVO (not 212+) should give you reasonable performance increase, or you can go for the bigger/heavier ones if you wanna push it further.

Thanks for reply mate, I was thinking of starting on a new build and was going to get the Corsair h100i, so may buy that first and try it on my i7 950 to se if it makes the difference
