Second Monitor not detecting with new GTX 660

So i just bought a new Gigabyte Geforce GTX 660 graphics card to replace my old 9800GT. I installed the card the same way i have installed all other gpu's and turned the computer on to install the drivers that came with the card.
When i rebooted to check if everything had worked the screen went black as soon as the "starting windows" logo had dissapeared. I restarted in safe mode to undo the driver changes so that the computer was again useable. I noticed that by unplugging my second monitor and installing the latest drivers that the main monitor works perfectly. If i try to reboot and plug in the second monitor then the same black screen error happens. So i tried booting with only 1 monitor and then plugging the second in when the computer was running. This simply caused the monitor to not be detected, i checked device manager as well and nothing was shown. To investigate further, i tried to boot with only the 'second' monitor plugged in and found that i did not even get an image for the 'starting windows logo' this time.
From this i gather that there is some clash that causes the second monitor to not allow the first to display when both are plugged in. The primary monitor is connected via a DVI-I cable and the secondary via HDMI. I have tried a separate HDMI cable incase that was the problem but to no avail.
I used both of these monitors with the previous graphics card so I know that they are both in working order.

My current specs are:
Motherboard: Asus M5A78L-M LE
Graphics: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 660
RAM: 4gb Corsair (all i know sorry)
Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate
Primary Monitor: BenQ G2410HD
Secondary Monitor: BenQ E2220HD

If I havent supplied any required info then I apologize and will try to find it straight away.

It sounds like the resolution it wants to use on the second monitor is not supported, possibly. Try setting up the displays to Mirror Mode, so that both screens are the same res.

Also things to try -
Use DVI for both monitors if possible.
Or try DVI and DVI adapter to VGA.
Swap which DVI port you use in the scenario you tested.

Do you even use the audio out from the card to your new monitor? If not there is no reason to use HDMI over the DVI. (just in case that way works).

The only reason im actually using HDMI is because the other DVI port on the graphics card is DVI-D and i do not have a cable that is capable of connecting to it and there are no VGA ports either so I was left only with the HDMI.
When I press windows key + p, i have chosen the duplicate option if that is the same as mirror mode but without the monitor being detected i doubt this will effect it unfortunately.
No im not actually using the audio out, im using separate speakers.
Thank you for your time, its much appreciated.

So, if you were to start the PC with 1 monitor hooked up with DVI (your first monitor, the working one), then after it gets to your desktop, switch the cable going to monitor 1 to monitor 2, does the troublesome monitor work?

Does that card come with a display port adapter?

Re: windows+p mode - not sure if thats the same or not. Have you tried the multi display set up wizard in the nvidia control panel?

Yeah, swapping the cable to the second monitor allows it to work fine so its clearly not the monitor thats the problem. I think you might be right that there is more to it, ill call nvidia in the morning and ask around more. Thank you very much for your help. I did try the nvidia setup wizard however, it just told me that only a single monitor was connected, even using the rigorous detection method.
