I need something that will work with 64-bit Windows 8, preferably with drivers specifically designed for Win8 x64.

My old Linksys WRT54G adapter was not recognized (at all), and the new TP-LINK WN851ND I got today has a whole host of issues--every time it connects to the Internet, the PC freezes; trying to install the drivers/utility software in compatibility mode (as per the "fix" on Microsoft's support site) resulted in the utter destruction of my Win8 install, forcing me to re-install Windows.

I've spent the whole day building a PC, and this is my only day off this week, so I want to get everything done that I can. I really need some advice/help here. My only other option at this point is a 50ft ethernet cable.

Please.

I'd take a look at the Asus

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

I used those throughout the Win 8 beta testing from day 1 and keep a few around, work great with WIN7 and XP also
