Hard Drive access light perpetually on.

I've been infected with the "zeroaccess" rootkit, and eventually decided to clear my whole hard drive as well as install Ubuntu, to replace Windows. Ever since I started my laptop yesterday my hard drive light has been shining brightly without a single pause. While this isn't too alarming, my computer has also been freezing a few seconds and working very slowly. Task manager showed nothing but ordinary processes and a CPU usage at around 0-1% occasionally spiking at 3%.

What to do, my system should be clean since everything on my computer is replaced or deleted?

Solution

All symptoms of a failed hard drive (bad sectors). Listen very closely for a repeating series of 'click-click-click-click....' while all this is going on. That'll ice it.
