Is my PC possibly defunct?

I have purchased a new retail copy of Windows 8 to install on the second hand pc I bought recently. The existing OS 7 appears to be dodgy and i do not know of another way of replacing it but via a clean install with a new set of discs. I went for win 8 not win 7 because the win 8 pro version was a good deal and i was assured that i could use it to do a full install and wipe of everything currently on the pc.

However the small print says the existing OS 7 has to be legit for the upgrade via the discs to work. If I cannot upgrade/install with the new set discs because of this, what do I do? Have I got a defunct pc?

The seller of the pc has no install discs, activation key or user passwords to give me.

Well I didn't know at the time. He showed the desktop front page thing working then said the broadband was down so couldn't go into the OS etc. I had travelled by train in the heat and had a taxi running. He was a teenager living at home.

Yeah I know, I'm just trying to build up a picture of my options IF it doesn't work.

Once I've opened the seal on the retail copy OS 8 I can't return it. Shop said so, and fair do's. I'm p****d at the extra money having to spend.

Heheh is that your British cultural influences coming out? Camping half means something else these days, well it did back then too. Tents are alright, would love to try a tipi.

Exactly. I recently gave someone a series of DVD's with (as far as I can tell) all of those movies.

Just to heads up, they are very out of fashion over here these days, far too un-PC! Everyone is watching sky Atlantic and the like....
