I have DSL internet service from my cable provider. Since all of my computers at the time were laptops I got a Router for WiFi and they didn't have to program anything for a LAN and therefore I have no service if I plug the hardwire directly into the LAN of even my laptop. At the moment my service is strictly WiFi and any LAN connections come directly off of the Router. Here's my problem - I now have a PC and it is a Win 98. It has a LAN card installed and Windows says it is working. I have also upgraded to USB 2.0 and have a TPlink wireless modem installed, which Windows also says is working. However, new computers read everything and start working on their own. This computer has none of the automatic stuff. No signal strength meter to click on and tell it to connect. All I can do is access the program to configure the Network. Problem is it asks for info that doesn't match any description of my service when I look it up on one of my connected laptops. For instance it asks for an Address and a Port. Assuming the Address is the IP, my laptop shows about 4 different IP's each with a different description. Nowhere do I see Port. Then if I go into Advanced it asks for things like Gopher and others which I have no idea what they are and there is nothing like that on my laptop. Now I can understand maybe having to configure the LAN for my service, but I don't see why I would have to do any configuring of the TPlink wireless modem - especially since it was working perfectly on a Win XP that I had for a while. This computer has been a real challenge to get it up and running with drivers for everything, but I made it. The only thing I lack is the internet which has me discouraged. I really need some good detailed information on how to get a connection. Thanks.
