The unlocked Phenom x4 B55 is actually an Athlon x4 655?

Okay I stumbled upon something that really caught my attention.

I have an Athlon x3 455 (95w) which is unlockable to a quad core. Doing so will make windows report it as a phenom x4 b55, and cpu-z will report it to have 126W TDP.

But get this, Phenom x4 B55 @ 3.3ghz average cpu mark is 3763.
Then, there is an Athlon X4 655 (Rated 95W) @ 3.2ghz average cpu mark is 3653.

B55 3.3ghz with 126w tdp = 3763
x4 655 3.2ghz with 95w tdp = 3653

Makes your mind wonder doesnt it?

Another thing also is that CPU-Z reports the Phenom B55 as a PROPUS core.
The x4 655 is also a propus core! Hence the similarity in performance with the cpu benchmarks above.

There's much more!. Athlon x3 455 was released on Q4 2010. Athlon x4 650 was released Q2 2011 and that's not much of a time phase!

So, does this mean that unlocking my Athlon x3 455 means that it will still operate at a 95W tdp?
AMD hid/locked the core for marketing purposes?

What do you think?

Solution

No. Enabling the fourth core will not magically make the other three use less power to keep the heat production within the given TDP rating. Given the same load, the new core will produce about the same amount of heat as each of the other cores. The new TDP should be about 133% of the original TDP. 95 watts times 133% (1.33) = 126 watts.

Sorry but you are mistaken, a LOT of the AMD dual and triple cores are actually fully functional quads that had cores disabled for marketing, in fact i too have the same chip running as a quad in my youngest boy's PC. The only ones you can't unlock are the FX chips, the Phenom II based WILL unlock if you have a board that supports UCC.
