1: The server arrived and I looked it over, and it seemed OK.

2: I installed the CD-Rom-drive, without any problem.
...(this involved removing the large top cover, so I also looked around inside to see if there was anything obviously loose, and all seemed ok)

3: I plugged in the server: And the sound of the (4) fans could be heard.

4: I switched on the server:
And it sounded like Concord taking off, as all 4 fans seemed to be running at maximum speed !

...And the 'amber system status indicator' (to the left of the right-hand HDD) was flashing (indicating a fault !)

5: I was able to install the OS, but the fans continue to run at full tilt when the server is powered up !

Help Please !

Servers are noisy; that's a fact of life. Rack-mounted servers are designed to sit in a server room where noise doesn't matter (but cooling does).

The error could be anything - fan error, top cover open, or somehting more obscure. In the end you are going to have to talk to Dell if it is causing problems. But the server diagnostics should pinpoint the fault.
Check the documentation to see what this system indication means.
Check BIOS for any fan-related settings.
Usually, servers slow down once an operating system is installed. Check Dell site for any relevant utilities / drivers. You may want to try server operating system instead (Microsoft can give you a trial copy of Windows Server).

Of course - at least while you play with it, you can unplug couple of fans to silence them ;)

Alabalcho: Thanks...
Dell's set up guide says: the 'amber system status indicator' flashes when the system needs attention due to a problem with power supplies, fans, system temperature, or HDD's

There are PS condition lights on the rear of the PSU, which indicate that the PSU is operating OK.
And both HDD where listed OK in the BIOS set-up.

Thanks.
