Do I need the extra vram?

I will be using maya, nuke after effects zbrush, photoshop, premier etc.

I will be working in 2k and up to 4k+ raw resolutions (can use proxies).

right now the AMD firepro w5000 is in my price range but I have been told 2gb is low by today's standards.

If i splurge extra on the w7000 model will I really make a gain.

I will also be doing heavy animation averaging 4k+ texturing.

It is also been suggested to gt a GTX680 4gb version but i'm not as keen on this. Unless it's on par with the w5000 in speed becuase all the online test suggest it's superfast in comparison.

I am currently using a amd fx8350(plan to upgrade to 8core intel in future) with an NVIDIA QUADRO Fx 5600 1.5gb which i bought used at the start of the year. before that i had a consumer NVIDIA 7600 256ram and the frame rate jump in maya improved a lot but I would like to get new graphics card which is up to scratch.

Thanks!!

Ok that helps knowing that.

my next question though is, having two graphics cards an option, say if i were to get 1 w5000 mainly for my maya usage and then the gtx to cover mostly everything else having the best of both words?

thanks

Gaming cards aren't cut out for anything more than amateur work. If you want, yes, use the 680 for games, but I guarantee that the W5000 wil outperform it in photoshop. (Maybe not if we include CUDA)

Photoshop isn't really my main concern with Maya after fx and nuke being priorities,

but how about the best of both worlds aproach with two graphics cards starting with buying a w5000 and then buying a 4gb geforce with cuda further down the line..

I'm a bit lost how to how i would switch between the cards in the program?

You'd probably have to physically switch them out.
