The other day (like an idiot) I tried plugging in my old computers hard drive into a new on, then when I pressed the power button I herd a pop, there was a slight flash and then smelt smoke. What can I do what's wrong?

Great that's wonderful, I'm not all that great with computer, but the part that short circuited was the area where the cords start that go from the main fan and area where the power cable comes in to the mother board

Ill start by replacing the psu and hopefully it works (also I found out that if you switch the power chord switch on in the back the fans run and the keyboard and mouse lights up for about 1 second before turning off

Then it is much more likely that your motherboard or cpu are dead. If the power supply were dead nothing would happen at all when you flip the switch in the back.
