The previous thread seems to have crashed and wont let me post. Seem a not so uncommon problem and its suggested starting anew.

Just built a good rig, so little short on cash at the mo, but really need to replace this basic Dell RT7D20.

I guess the only must is that it needs backlit keys. Doesn't need to be a gaming one, but am interested to see what their like.

I did look at Microsofts sidewinder X4, seems to have pretty good reviews.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

You aren't going to find a mechanical keyboard for that price, so i would suggest the Sidewinder X4. Here's another good one:

I own the Sidewinder x4, and it is a pretty solid keyboard. You will not see the backlit keyboard, however, unless you are gaming in the dark. The customizable keys on the left hand side of the keyboard are a nice little bonis as well. Not mechanical, but still quite responsive.

Is there much difference with a mechanical? My parents praise there one (which is about 10 or so years old, personally i hate the dam thing lol. It sounds like a type writer and the keys go with a clunk :s.

Which reminds me of another point. Im tempted to get a silent keyboard (mainly cause of my parents one lol), i saw razer make stealth versions. Are theses what modern mechanicals are like? or is it specifically designed like that?

I've never used a mechanical keyboard before, so can't help you there. But as far as cheaper backlit keyboards go, I've just replaced my Saitek Eclipse 2 with a Logitech G110 (literally just, This is the first paragraph I've typed).

The Saitek was a nice keyboard, and served me well for a good few years - it has a very bright backlight, three colours, and a brightness adjuster. It also has media keys. I don't know if the eclipse is still available, but they still do a similar model, and it appears to also be available under different manufacturer names.

The Logitech's backlight is a lot dimmer, but there isn't as much bleed through between keys. The base keyboard feels a little more upmarket to me, and it not only has media keys, but headphone/microphone/usb sockets, and a set of 12 macro keys. The colour can change between red and blue on a scale - so you've got loads of shades of red, blue and everything in between.

It's going to take me a while to get used to typing on though! They're not particularly similar in terms of touch-typing - different key spacing etc.

Haha, now theres something i didn't think i'd be reading while looking for a keyboard.
Guess my preferred would be Cherry Black lol.

Thanks for the replys guys, been insightful and given me a good idea what keyboard to get next. Think will get the Sidewinder X4 for now, seems unbeatable for its £30 price tag.

Here are two relatively inexpensive back lit keyboards. Don't know if Amazon/uk stocks them but might be worth taking a look at.
I do NOT own either, but found them while looking for a replacement for my Logitech G15. Currently using a G510, it's quiet, but probably out of your price range.
Good luck.
