We currently have a Xeon E5-2687 dual processor system we use for CFD. We'd like to get more speed out of the system. From what I can see the 2687 released almost 15 months ago and it seems "overdue" for a newer faster system. The E5-2689 is rated modestly faster on benchmarks but we're hoping for a bigger increase. We could go to blade server and throw way more processors at the problem but there is a pretty significant software price to pay as it's priced by the core. So, assuming we don't go to a blade server we're trying to determine if there is a step increase coming soon on the desktop systems where we could see a significant speed increase from what we have now.

the only way you will see a large performance increase is to go with a system with more cores if the software is highly threaded.

there will not be that great an increase in performance from a newer processor if the processor was the newest out 15 months ago.

your best bet is to go with more cores or to overclock the current setup and fit better cooling which will most likely give you the extra performance of a like for like upgrade to the newest version of the same processor line.
