Building a new computer because my current is 7+ years old, and I think it's quite overdue for an upgrade.

Specs of new:

Case: CM HAF 912 - already bought (www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119233)

Case fans: x2 CM Megaflow 200cm (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103072)

Mobo: Asus Sabertooth Z77 (www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131821)

CPU: Intel i7 3570K (downgraded from 3770K) (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116501)

CPU Cooler: CM Hyper 212 EVO (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103099)

Mem: G.Skill Ripjaws X 16GB (2x8GB) (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231615)

Still deciding -
HDD&SDD: I know I want both, SDD primary - HDD storage.
Optical Drive(s?): Absolutely no idea.
PSU: I think a 850W will do, but I don't know much about them.
GPU: Later.. I'm not going to be doing extreme gaming anytime soon.

Criticism (constructive or not) welcome~

honestly, this build is totally out of sync, what are you doing with this thing? an i7 unlocked, an overclocking aftermarket heatsink, no graphics card?

could you tell us what you're doing with this? what your goal is? what you want it to run?

Pick Haswell CPU they have better onboard graphics for normal tasks

and Z87 Motherboard (Gigabyte Sniper M5 is a very good choice) which has a very good sound onboard the best actually no other mobo matches it in sound chip and amplifier on board.

, get the Samsung 840 pro SSD , 128G or 256G it is the best in the market,

If you are planning on SLI in the future , then yes get a 850 WATTS PSU , if not , then you can run your PC using 250 WATTS Power supply without any problems ...

and if you like the HAF 912 , then get the plus one or the Advance one.

I want to build it into a mid-high range gaming box in the future, but for right now I just want a computer that can run some non-intensive games (League of Legends, Minecraft, etc) with browser(s), Skype, and music.

then drop the i7, get an i5, and get a graphics card, onboard wont run those games well.

NO, do not listen to this guy. It's easy to think newer is better, but that is not always true. Look up the CPU rundown and Haswell review articles on Toms and then let the OP decide if 5-10% performance is worth ~$50 to go with Haswell over IB. and that is not considering the fact that Haswell runs much hotter than IB and cannot get stable overclocks as high as IB. Thus, IB can make up for the minimal stock performance edge haswell has over it.

Note: since I doubt anyone will look up the above mentioned articles; Haswell performs 10-15% high er than IB OVERALL, but the catch is that the majority of this increase stemd from Haswells 4600 iGPU. Seeing as the op will get a discrete gpu (now or in the future, either/or) this gain is negligible and so considering non-iGPU performance, it performs 5% better, 10% at most (at STOCK settings).

funny you never mentioned :

1- Z87 motherboard have 6 Sata 3 ports NATIVE without extra cost , old mobos ONLY 2 Native , and for more must add chips and raise price.
2- Z87 has NATIVE 2 extra pair of USB3 , at cheap entry levelmobo .. the old ones again NOT
3-Z87 mobos ALL of them have BETTER sound chip onboard.
4- The haswell onboard GPU is faster (4600 VS 4000) , so Quick Sync for encoding Movies is FASTER , and ONLY "z" mother board will allow you to use both Dedicated Graphics AND Add on GPU BOTH at same time for rendering and Encoding movies.

see ? this is how you talk . with Knowledge !

I just purchased:
CORSAIR HX Series HX750 750W (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139010)
ASRock Z77 Extreme6 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157295)
Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148840)
Intel Core i5-3570K Ivy Bridge 3.4GHz (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116504)

Still deciding on GPU/Mem/SSD + I just remembered I have a low-end GPU (GeForce 610) I can use for a little.

Very knowledgeable there my friend, hail your powers of the google-search.

I know Z87 mobo's offer additional sata/usb 3 connectivity, you're not the only member of these forums (who woulda thought eh). In fact, many H87 mobo's do too.

Back to relevance for a moment, the op indicated that he is interested in an HDD + SSD, two drives, thus no NEED (wants are different, I am talking needs) for additional sata 3. SATA 3 HDD's are a gimmick, they can barely saturate sata 2, but I'm sure you already knew that. The op would only need a Haswell mobo if he intends to have more than 2 SSDs. Let him answer that question if you would like to ask it, but I think a little bit of reason can be applied here to figure that it is quite unlikely he will need more, lets be honest, does the rest of his build indicate the budget for multiple SSDs.

The USB argument is laughable and a complete non issue for the far majority of users. Who has ever filled all USB ports on their computer and found themselves thinking, "damn if only I bought that premium motherboard with 16 native USB ports).

If you've been paying attention you'd have also noticed the op intends to purchase a discrete gpu. igpu becomes irrelevant at this point. He could blow the money on Haswell for the marginally improved igpu for the period he does not have a discrete card, but that is far from a clear decision. Most people wouldn't spend that money as it'd quickly be a waste.

Onboard sound is the only valid point you've made, and is what I would put forward to the op to see if that is something that matters to him...
