Trying to lower temps on Graphics Card - running WAY hot!!

Hi all,

I have a GeForce 9800GT card installed in my system, which is an HP Pavilion m9360f. My card is running rather hot at 77 C idle. I don't typically push my card too much, so I don't know how much it maxes out. Is such a high idle temperature a concern??

Also, I just took out the graphics card, separated the fan and gpu, and gave it a really good cleaning/dusting. Also removed old thermal paste and applied some Artic Silver 5. Even then, the video card literally stayed at the exact same temperature of 77 C. Agghh I'm running out of ideas!?!!?

Any help on lowering my temps would be greatly appreciated!!

After doing a bit of research, most people with this card see about a 30-40 C increase in temperature at high-intensity loads, which would put me right at the limit. To make sure, I'll have to find some way to stress the graphics card and record temperatures at the same time (which I have no idea how to do...). I would post anything up here if it helps.

And is it normal for the card to not see ANY decrease in temperature after dusting it? I mean, I took out a lot of dust, and I replaced the cheap stock thermal compound with arctic silver 5. So shouldn't I see at least a little decrease in temps??

Hey,

Make sure you applied the thermal compound properly, and make sure that the fan spins properly. Also try setting a custom fan profile for your graphics card using MSI afterburner. Also try taking off the side of your case and then check what temperatures you are getting.

Now to monitor your temperatures use GPU-Z:

As for the stress test use a typical game or a benchmark like Unigine heaven.

Hope this helps!

Surprised to hear even with a good dusting you see no difference in temps. Naturally I thought ambient temp, but I'm pretty sure your avg room temps aren't anywhere near 77 Celsius so we can cross off that as potential contributor.

I agree with fil1p with using something like Heaven or 3dmark but those are designed to stress test overclock stability. While it will definitely help determine the max load temps, realistically speaking I'd prefer to benchmark with games you play frequently to determine typical load temps.

Also if your card ever reaches critical temp for the card it'll auto-undervolt or even shutdown to prevent damage. If this has yet to happen you have nothing to worry about.

Thank you guys for the quick replies!

I applied the thermal paste by first removing the old stock paste with alcohol dampened cloth. Then I applied a half-pea size drop of artic silver 5. Then I cut the corner of a plastic bag and wrapped it over the tip of my finger to smooth out the paste evenly/thin. Everything was already dusted out, then I put the card back together. Was there anything I wasn't supposed to do there?

Also, I'm running the desktop without the side panel, and the interior is thoroughly dusted out. I get 77 C with the panel either on or off, so I think there has to be something with the card. The stock fan seems to be running fine as far as I can tell.

I will run GPU-Z and MSI afterburner as soon as I get to my computer! And I'm also kinda worried that over time, all the extra heat is going to fry my card... And I've been using the card for about 5 years now if that might help explain anything

Open your case, put a big ventilator on the card. See if it drops. Your case is an HP, not designed for state of the art airflow. I would tend to think that could be the problem.

5 years is great mileage. If you have been using this under similar conditions, taking into account of age, I wouldn't change a thing especially with no mention of artifacts, stutters, black screens. When it does go bottom up there are plenty of cards in the $100 and below range with more grunt. That's another possible 5 years.
