Sleep mode issues, system resume fails

Having a newish problem recently where when sometimes after my computer has been put to sleep for several hours I will tap a key on the keyboard to wake it up and it acts as if it had been put into hibernation, only it fails to boot up, rather turning on and off constantly for 3-5 second periods. So therefore I have to either force shut-down or switch off the PSU from the back to stop the restarting. The next time I start up the PC it tries to resume windows but fails and instead goes to a black screen with a blinking underscore in the top left. Finally after another restart I will be able to choose the option to cancel the resume and start up normally.

Very strange problem and very confused to what is causing it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Try updating your system firmware. That's a common cause of various power issues.

What in particular are you referring to, sorry it just seems like a very open suggestion.

Motherboard firmware can also be called the BIOS/UEFI

oh yeah ok, I'm currently running the latest bios version for my mobo as it was one of the fixes that i thought would help my previous problems, which it did but still left me with this. There are a few windows updates that i just completed but i doubt they will help.
