I'm pretty sure everyone is tired of these, but I appreciate anyone who gives me some help. The following is what I've come up with after looking at a few people's threads and browsing through newegg and pcpartpicker.com. Back story, I was given a free AMD A8 6600k 3.9 GHz processor at the Geek & Sundry lounge during San Diego Comic Con. This might be the most expensive 'free gift' I've ever received!
And now I'm debating whether to build up or just eBay it and move on. I need to be able to sell the cost of this to my wife, so it has to pass the affordability check. As a result, I think I need to knock the cost down a tad. I've never built a machine before but I can follow instructions and youtube is usually pretty helpful. Heck, I could use a little extra geek cred
Approximate Purchase Date: this week or next
Budget Range: $500-700
System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming (battlefield through sim city levels of rendering, maybe the AC4 when it drops). Photoshop. Maybe eventually used as a movie/media pc.
Are you buying a monitor: No
Do you need to buy OS: Yes (I intend on buying windows 8)
Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Not picky, I was looking mostly on newegg. Though I found some components were cheaper or the same price on amazon, and I get free shipping from there.
Location: San Diego, CA
Parts Preferences: no preference other than the already owned AMD A8 6600k 3.9 GHz quad core
Overclocking: No
SLI or Crossfire: No to Maybe
Your Monitor Resolution: 1600x1200
Additional Comments: Quiet wouldn't be a bad thing, but not necessary. I'd like to knock a little cost off of what I have selected below.
Selected parts:
Gigabyte GA-F2A85XM-D3H Micro ATX FM2 - $64.99 NCIX US
Corsair Vengeance LP 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 - $49.99 Newegg
Corsair Vengeance LP 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 - $49.99 Newegg
Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM - $59.98 Outlet PC
Gigabyte Radeon HD 7870 2GB - $219.99 Microcenter
Cooler Master HAF 932 Blue ATX Full Tower - $129.99 Newegg
Antec 550W ATX12V - $64.99 Amazon
Microsoft Windows 8 (OEM) (32-bit) - $89.98 Amazon

As configured (with rebates): $729.
The part selector rated the rig at 373W with the processor (removed from the list since I already own it). The 550W gives me some buffer.
Not sure about the graphics card. I know it is typically the most critical component and most expensive for a gaming rig. Affordable, decent power, with DVI and HDMI are pretty much my only thoughts as it would be compatible with my existing monitor and LCD TV. For media PC stuff, I'd add on the tuner and capture card, but that is down the line.
I've also seen direct touch processor cooling fans. Not sure if I need it as I'm not overclocking...? The mind boggles at the myriad of choices.
Is there a way to bring the price down a touch without sacrificing too much performance? And does this rig cut it? I realize I'm spending a touch more on a case, but it takes the work out of routing/installing the fans, I'm certainly willing to change that around if its not too much more work.
