How can I set up a TV and a Monitor on my computer?

I recently moved my Dell Inspiron into a new room with a Samsung Plasma screen TV. I enjoy playing games on my computer, but also use it for general functions such as browsing/email. Since I am in this position, I would love to be able to take the advantage of Steam Big Picture to play games such as Borderlands 2 on my TV, while still being able to sit at my desk and browse/check email on my older Dell monitor. My PC has a AMD Radeon 7750 in it, which has both a dvi and HDMI port built in. I have tried plugging both my monitor and TV in simultaneously, which results in the monitor showing a blank black screen, and the TV showing my desktop. To switch between them is a pain, as I have to crawl under my desk and switch the cables every time. I have a few ideas on how I could set this up, but as I am by no means a tech mogul, I have no idea where to start/how to execute my ideas.

First off, I have seen people set up dual monitors in such a way that one can show A game in full screen, while the other shows the desktop. How applicable is that to my situation? (I have AMD catalyst controls which has some tools for dual monitors)

Secondly, my CPU has integrated graphics that I disabled when i upgraded to a graphics card. Would it be possible to use my Integrated graphics with my monitor and Graphics card with my PC simultaneously?

Third, I could just set them up to be dual monitors, but how would I do so without my monitor showing a black screen? (I should point out my monitor is from around 2002, only has VGA and DVI ports, and only shows up to 720p.)

Any feedback or other solutions would be appreciated!

What graphics card output and cable are you using to connect your PC to your Plasma TV?
What graphics card output and cable are you using to connect your PC to your Monitor?
What is the native resolution of your Plasma TV. If you don't know, what is the model number of the TV?
When you say you see your desktop on the plasma when both displays are connected, do you also see your icons or just the desktop background?

1. The AMD Raedon 7750 with an HDMI cable from the 7750 HDMI port to the TV.

2. The Same graphics card but with its DVI output with a converter(from DVI to VGA) to the VGA port of my monitor.

3. The Samsung LNT3242HX/XAA (this is the "model code")

4. When I started with the monitor plugged in, then plugged in the TV, the monitor showed a black screen and the TV showed my desktop and icons. When I started with the TV plugged in and then plugged in my Monitor, my monitor showed the desktop and icons, the TV only showed the desktop.
