Hello there community !

So yesterday I got my gtx 770 and seasonic x-850 PSU. Being in a very excited "oh nothing could go wrong"-mood, I cleaned my pc, rewired it completely(Yeay for modular PSU`s) and plugged in the shiny new hardware.

I then started up my pc, and... all I see on my screen is " o_ " at the bottom right corner. I was quite upset :??:, "come on! NEW hardware!". After restarting windows several times, I left it on this "strange screen" to see what would happen. And then I heard the windows startup sound....

My mobo does not have on-board graphics, so I can`t plug in my screen there to test if everything works without the graphics card in. So I swapped in my old 8600gt and the pc started up (taking longer than usual, Intel BootManager started appearing after restarts and takes forever). I then tried to install the provided drivers for the 770 while using only the 8600, but the drivers said that the 8600 is not compatible with the drivers (No surprise, big age gap). My internet connection at this time was barely working(what luck hey?),so the Nvidia drivers (170mb or something) would stop downloading after about 20mb. So I could not download the latest Nvidia drivers for my 8600 from the website (Hoping these could at least make my 770 display something). This also means I could not download the latest 770 drivers either.

I then read online(at least I can brows with the connection...) that I could install both cards in different PCI slots at the same time. And that windows 7 was "pretty good at keeping 2 different cards drivers separate". So I then used the 8600 as my display card just to get into my windows[recap, I could hear windows start up with just the 770 installed, but nothing displayed except the "o_"], and had the 770 in the secondary PCI express card. (Note: pc only starts after second reboot with gtx 770 and 8600 in this config, swapping around the gtx770 to the 1st PCI slot and 8600 in second gets the pc stuck in BIOS, or stating no BootDevice detected.). The drivers then accepted to "continue" with the installation, but then when it finishes it states the drivers failed to install.

I then uninstalled the 8600`s drivers with the DeviceManager, restarted and tried again to install the 770 drivers (still while using the 8600 to get into windows). And that's how far I got last night from 22:00 to 02:00. I`m at work at the moment, so I thought I`d research the problem online. This is what Ive figured till now:

- The 770`s "default drivers" aren't auto installing properly to my system, so even though windows starts up, it doesn't know how to "use" the 770.
- You cant use an older card (8600) to install newer 770 drivers(was a long shot:p)
- In the device manager under "display" the computer listed "8600" and underneath that something about "VGA display device"(cant recall the exact words now, will check it when I get home later after work).
- I don't know if it could possibly be the power supply somehow, it does make an extremely irritating whine noise when the pc is powered on or off (with all the components plugged in of course). And when I switch the power off by the wall, the pitch jumps around and then keeps on getting higher till disappearing, then all the mobo led`s switch off too.

So yeah, that's what happened last night. I would greatly appreciate some advice :). I have, however read a bunch of "guides" today about similar problems (not exactly the same circumstances though) so here is what ill do first when I gt home.

1) plug in only 8600, start up windows, uninstall all Nvidia drivers and applications.
2) plug in only the 770 then start up the pc, hoping drivers will install automatically just so I can get into windows with only the 770 in the system.(maybe the 8600 drivers clashed with the 770 drivers ?)
3) if it doesn't work, plug in the 770 and 8600 both, check to make sure no drivers are installed(or auto installed) and then run the 770`s drivers installation files. (latest ones that I downloaded at work). Ill also re-install the Nvidia software and check if it picks up the 770 as a display card and maybe auto install drivers or download and install drivers ?
4) if that fails, ill continue searching the web.... please feel free to make suggestions in the comments of what could possibly be the problem.

I have not changed any BIOS settings yet, with just the 770 installed, I could not get into the BIOS. Also, when I first started the pc, it didn't load the BIOS, then after a restart it gave an error about my boot drive not found. I then unplugged my other 3 HDD`s and unnecessary case fans and swapped out the 770 for the 8600, after that, it didn't say anything about the boot drive again.

Thanks for reading this long post :).
(update): The Nvidia site recommends the same drivers for both these cards. [320.49].

its not your PSU or GPU it's your MOBO. You have not given the whole specs of your system but i am assuming that you are using a pre ivy bridge system???

i had same problem. i upgraded from a gtx 570 to a 770 and my mobo would hang on post with B2 code (PCI legacy some shit) and then boot normally but i could not get into BIOS. for the record i have:

i5-2500k
MSI P67-GD53

essentially if you are using an old (mobo) BIOS the card is incompatible to an extent. i had to upgrade to latest BIOS to make the machine boot normally. There is an issue that the latest BIOS's do not like the SB chips and can not let you OC it in some cases. If you like to OC i'd look into it.

In my case everything was fine, i upgraded BIOS to 4.3 with ME8 and managed to get my old 4.4ghz OC back.... happy days.

so my advice is to stick your old card in and update your bios. then plug new card in and check everything is ok.

As i said though, you have not given your full system specs.

Thank you for the reply, maaaan just my luck. I might be mistaken though, it was quite late last night and I was running on fumes. Ill double check that fact. I`m really hoping its not the hardware, because I just cant wait a few more weeks for the return/tests/headaches that come with RMA.

ahh! That is correct ! My system is:

Intel i7 2600K
Intel Burrage mobo
8gb RAM (2 x 4GM @ 1333)
seasonic X850
gtx 770 new, and 8600 (old)

If this is the solution, Im going to cry of happiness. :D, seeing as you guessed my CPU right, knowing about the BIOS problem, and I know I have not updated my BIOS before, this is very likely the solution :).

Ill be home in about 5-6 hours, ill try your solution first and then post my results :).

btw, how did you happen-upon this info ? I googled quite extensively today and did not find a trace or mention of the Ivyridge BIOS problem.

[update] I mixed up the names, my 2600k is a SANDY bridge CPU. lol.
[update] Damn I must be sleep walking, I confused myself, "..your system must be a PRE-IVYBRIDGE".." Alls good now, ill reply with results onceI get home :).

i had that B2 post code. Googled that and read that it is a PCI-E compatibility issue so i added 2 and 2 together. searched for the B2 plus 770 issue and came upon this solution. As i said and this is a DISCLAIMER!! people have reported issues with this.

Do you OC?

if you do some setting do not work with click bios and you have to use +/- keys to alter. Otherwise mine worked fine but some people have reported bad things....

Ah I see. Smart man you are ;)
Nah, I dont OC, I have in the past though, I ran the "auto OC" intelExtreme sofware when I got the i7. I set it to "light OC with little/no voltage changes", and it set my cpu from 3.4 to 4.2Ghz. Not bad I think xD. I changed it back to stock though, because my CPU`s performance is fine as is, but in the future I might OC just to get a few extra years :p. I prefer buying a more expensive component and leaving it stock till its warranty passes and then trying to get the best OC after that :p.

ok update:

I finally got the card working, had to do so many BIOS updates and Nvidia driver updates, I lost track. But its not working 100% it seems. In GPU-Z the specs of the card are all correct, and temperature sensors read 22 - 24 at idle. Something thats strange is when I startup my pc, I see the Intel Logo like normal, then the screen goes black, then it turns back on when windows logs in. Any idea why that could be ?

I`m downloading the "free" 3D Mark (1GB) to bench the card, because It seems to under perform. Im saying this because using the Geforce Experience software suggestions to set my games settings, the games still lag and run on very low FPS. Skyrim runs at 12fps everything on ultra, Borderlands 2 avg around 15-30fps with everything on ultra.

So what do you guys think ? Could it be that the drivers that actually work are buggy and makes the card underperform ? And do you guys think I should just send it back and buy a different brand, like MSI. Im very disappointed in having so much issues with brand new hardware. :/

The readings im getting from MSI afterburner say:
temp: 26
GPU usage - 100%
Core clock - 405mhz
memory clock - 324mhz
memory usage - 745mb

If im gaming or just in windows, the core clock and memory clocks don't seem to change.
[update] added temp
[update] sorry, it seems if I quit the game the core clock drops to 135mhz. and the memory usage and GPU usage drops to. thats the only difference.
[update] I googled around about the low performing 770s, and found that the beta drivers were at fault. I only installed the beat drivers to get my pc working[no display when installing 320.49 drivers], but rolling back to the 320.49 drivers seems to have worked. :)

run bootlog (google it as i forget how to get it up) this could point to the black screen culprit but yes it sounds like drivers are being loaded last which is a bit strange. there could be other reasons for this too, does it take a long time to get to windows login?

Also if your gpu is running at 450mhz at 100% that is not right. Base clock is 1046mhz. Try to fiddle with afterburner oc settings to get it to run at its stock speed.

What make and model is the card?

Hi, thanx for the advice about the bootlog, ill check it out some time this week(extremely busy week ahead).

And I have sorted my "performance issue".In my comment above, I said that I rolled back my drivers (which were the 3.26 something BETA drivers to the 3.20.49 and the performance jumped up to what I was expecting :). Getting around 100fps on both games in fights and all. :D I only had the beta drivers installed because the 3.20.49 drivers kept on stating "driver installation failed", but after installing the beta 3.26.something, I could roll them back to the 3.20.49 drivers :). Thanx for the comment btw :).

I ran the 3D mark score on my stock system (i7 2600k, 8gb 1333Ram, gtx 770 (inno3D)) and got a final score of 6714. Im guessing this is an expected score though? This was my first time running 3Dmark, so I have no idea xD.
[edit] just to add, the score was from the 3D mark advanced edition: Fire Strike Demo
