Hello there community !
So yesterday I got my gtx 770 and seasonic x-850 PSU. Being in a very excited "oh nothing could go wrong"-mood, I cleaned my pc, rewired it completely(Yeay for modular PSU`s) and plugged in the shiny new hardware.
I then started up my pc, and... all I see on my screen is " o_ " at the bottom right corner. I was quite upset , "come on! NEW hardware!". After restarting windows several times, I left it on this "strange screen" to see what would happen. And then I heard the windows startup sound....
My mobo does not have on-board graphics, so I can`t plug in my screen there to test if everything works without the graphics card in. So I swapped in my old 8600gt and the pc started up (taking longer than usual, Intel BootManager started appearing after restarts and takes forever). I then tried to install the provided drivers for the 770 while using only the 8600, but the drivers said that the 8600 is not compatible with the drivers (No surprise, big age gap). My internet connection at this time was barely working(what luck hey?),so the Nvidia drivers (170mb or something) would stop downloading after about 20mb. So I could not download the latest Nvidia drivers for my 8600 from the website (Hoping these could at least make my 770 display something). This also means I could not download the latest 770 drivers either.
I then read online(at least I can brows with the connection...) that I could install both cards in different PCI slots at the same time. And that windows 7 was "pretty good at keeping 2 different cards drivers separate". So I then used the 8600 as my display card just to get into my windows[recap, I could hear windows start up with just the 770 installed, but nothing displayed except the "o_"], and had the 770 in the secondary PCI express card. (Note: pc only starts after second reboot with gtx 770 and 8600 in this config, swapping around the gtx770 to the 1st PCI slot and 8600 in second gets the pc stuck in BIOS, or stating no BootDevice detected.). The drivers then accepted to "continue" with the installation, but then when it finishes it states the drivers failed to install.
I then uninstalled the 8600`s drivers with the DeviceManager, restarted and tried again to install the 770 drivers (still while using the 8600 to get into windows). And that's how far I got last night from 22:00 to 02:00. I`m at work at the moment, so I thought I`d research the problem online. This is what Ive figured till now:
- The 770`s "default drivers" aren't auto installing properly to my system, so even though windows starts up, it doesn't know how to "use" the 770.
- You cant use an older card (8600) to install newer 770 drivers(was a long shot)
- In the device manager under "display" the computer listed "8600" and underneath that something about "VGA display device"(cant recall the exact words now, will check it when I get home later after work).
- I don't know if it could possibly be the power supply somehow, it does make an extremely irritating whine noise when the pc is powered on or off (with all the components plugged in of course). And when I switch the power off by the wall, the pitch jumps around and then keeps on getting higher till disappearing, then all the mobo led`s switch off too.
So yeah, that's what happened last night. I would greatly appreciate some advice . I have, however read a bunch of "guides" today about similar problems (not exactly the same circumstances though) so here is what ill do first when I gt home.
1) plug in only 8600, start up windows, uninstall all Nvidia drivers and applications.
2) plug in only the 770 then start up the pc, hoping drivers will install automatically just so I can get into windows with only the 770 in the system.(maybe the 8600 drivers clashed with the 770 drivers ?)
3) if it doesn't work, plug in the 770 and 8600 both, check to make sure no drivers are installed(or auto installed) and then run the 770`s drivers installation files. (latest ones that I downloaded at work). Ill also re-install the Nvidia software and check if it picks up the 770 as a display card and maybe auto install drivers or download and install drivers ?
4) if that fails, ill continue searching the web.... please feel free to make suggestions in the comments of what could possibly be the problem.
I have not changed any BIOS settings yet, with just the 770 installed, I could not get into the BIOS. Also, when I first started the pc, it didn't load the BIOS, then after a restart it gave an error about my boot drive not found. I then unplugged my other 3 HDD`s and unnecessary case fans and swapped out the 770 for the 8600, after that, it didn't say anything about the boot drive again.
Thanks for reading this long post .
(update): The Nvidia site recommends the same drivers for both these cards. [320.49].
