Possible Failing Hard Drive

Trying to access data on a WD 1.5 TB Drive, the drive was one of 4 in a HP-EX485 Home Server which was used to back up PC's in the home and store Tivo Recordings. I had no problems copying stored files on the other 3 drives but one is giving me fits. The trouble drive when placed in a external drive dock wil sometimes spin up normally acquiring a drive letter and producing a full directory listing, at other times it will acquire a drive letter but then be followed by a message indicating the drive needs to be formatted to be usable. I seem to get the same pattern whether I attach the drive using USB or ESata or directly attaching to motherboard.

On one occasion when it booted normally I ran checkdisk and it reported no errors, when it boots fully I am able to successfully transfer files off the drive however the transfer speeds eventually slow to a crawl and eventually fail and the drive becomes inaccessible. There a no unusal mechanical noises coming from the drive. My quess is that their is something failing in the controller or drive motor itself.

Would appreciate any ideas or suggestions of possibly useful utilities.. Thanks
