I just bought my desktop and I used it to run the windows 7 installation cd and install my video card drivers. I just tried a movie in it too and that worked fine. I went to burn some music onto a disk and it isn't recognizing the disk at all. It just says insert a disk.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

If your drive is specifically a DVD-ROM (ROM = Read-Only Memory) drive then you can't burn any optical media with it.

If you have a DVD recordable and rewritable drive then you should be able to burn CDs and DVDs. Some optical drives have problems recognizing blank media that use certain color dyes.

What is the exact brand and model number of your optical disk drive?

All it says is DVD Rom. Does that mean that I'll have to buy a new one just to burn cds? Also, what would I have to buy to be capable of writing discs.

Go into the system information. Components and then CD-Rom and Copy exactly what is there.

E.g Mine goes Description. CD-ROM drive
Media type. DVD writer

I can't imagine a new pc coming without a writer.

If you really have got a Read only drive. Then your option is an external, USB disc writer. Or opening up your pc and putting something cheap like the liteon ihas 124-04 CD/DVD writer. Relatively simple but make sure your confident.
