I built my own gaming PC about 3 weeks ago (1st build ever). I've had zero problems with it until today. I have an Internet connection but can't browse or connect using Steam, Origin or IE. I tried going to the command prompt as admin and running:

netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

And several other variants I found online. The browser just spins and spins. It never stops but nothing ever comes up. Please help.

On another note, I didn't install all the various drivers that came with my Asus z87 a motherboard. Should I have installed them?

go to control panel.

internet options.

network connections.

lan settings.

make sure auto detect settings is ticked and ok then apply ok internet options.

see if this helps.

the other thing to do is to open a command prompt and type.

ipconfig /release

then

ipconfig /renew

if the first thing does not fix it.

You can start by testing basic IP connectivity and DNS.

Try opening a command prompt and using "ping www.google.com"
If you get "reply from ..." then maybe check the proxy / connection settings in your browser
If you get "request timed out" messages, then it's a basic IP /DNS issue which should be fairly easy to solve.
(I'm sure we can provide more assistance if needed :)

Regarding the drivers, I always use the drivers from the manufacture. Windows will just the default Microsoft drivers (if available) and may not provide all the functionality of your hardware. In fact, you are also better off to download the drivers from the motherboard manufactures website to make sure you have the latest version.

Hope This Helps-

I did then rebooted. It pulled up my home page but then quit working again as soon as I clicked elsewhere.

I ran it 3 or 4 more times and it worked briefly all but one time. Took that many times for me to download 25 MB of Windows updates.

Based on the comments about, it may be a speed / duplex negotiation issue

you can force your adapter to 100/Full:

Steps: Control Panel --> Network and Sharing Center --> Change Adapter Settings --> right click the conection and select properties --> select Configure button --> goto Advanced tab --> look for Link Speed and Duplex --> change Auto Negotiate to 100 Mbps Full Duplex.

The speed supported depends on the router / switch where you PC is connected. If the internet connection completely stops working, change it back to Auto.

I get a response from the IPv4 address but not the default gateway.

By the way, I'm using a wireless adapter (if that makes a difference).

Update - now I can ping both after temp disabling avast but Internet is acting the same.

Not easily done unless I go buy a very long cable. Best I can tell, my wireless connection has remained strong the entire time this problem has been going on.

PS My wifi is working fine with my laptop.

Hi mate,

I too faced the same problem, after trying everything available on internet frm IP Configuration, DNS , i found the problem was avast antivirus blocking access to internet. There is a setting for webscan in avast that has been blocking internet access as pinging through CMD prompt was working fine. so i would advise any users facing the same problem to first check if antivirus programme or firewall settings are blocking the browsing of internet applications.
