I've been out of the "custom rig" game for a while so I'm not sure what's what now. I need a card that will work great on it's own, and even better via crossfire x with the SAME card (I like pairs). It's an AMD system so no Nvidia please.
System Specs:
CPU: AMD FX-8350 Eight-Core 4GHz
RAM: 16Gb (2x8Gb) Corsair Dominator Platinum 1600Mhz (will UG to 36Gb)
OS: Windows 8 64-bit
Ports: 2 PCI Express x16 CrossfireX Ready

I play a large variety of games. The most demanding so far is Planetside2 but that chokes at CPU level, not GPU. I also do work in UDK and other 3D applications, often working with High-Def models. Anything <$400 would be great. As much info on the cards and the market in general (Who's who and What's what) would be awesome. Thanks.

Best single card right now is HD7970
an cheap example would be http://www.amazon.com/Sapphire-DL-DVI-I-SL-DVI-D-PCI-Express-11197-03-40G/dp/B009B6Y01Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1374949176&sr=8-1&keywords=7970

The HD7970 is released last year, still one of the good price/performance card out there right now. As far as it goes, I believe AMD are going to release a next generation card around Q4, so if you can wait it would be wise, since either the current card would receive a price drop or the new one performs much better.

Right now, there is no sub ~$320 card that would beat the 7970.

Note: AMD only, I did not include NVIDIA series in my comparison.

@vinhn
That looks good to me! I'll probably buy the 2nd after the new line comes out. Just need one for now (no onboard graphics).

@computer_nugget2
I'd rather buy the better one so I don't have to upgrade as quickly. I do not have an official monitor right now, just an old scrap LCD. I'll be getting something nice eventually.
