What GPU for an i7 920?

Hi all,

So, my aim is to get a new GPU - I don't have the funds for a complete machine upgrade at the moment. My current machine spec is as follows:

CPU: Intel Core i7 920@2.67GHz (stock frequency)
MB: Asus P6T SE (Cross-Fire only)
RAM: 6GB
GPU: 9800GTX
PSU: Seasonic X-750
SC: Asus Xonar DS 7.1

Basically, my 9800GTX is really showing its age, and well, it's clearly struggling. Since I think that my current i7 should be good for another year or two, I would like to buy a GPU that will be good for that length of time - and by good, I mean I'd ideally like smooth graphics on ultra settings at 1080p for the latest games currently available (so, I know I'm not looking at a budget card). It's possibly worth noting that I'm planning on upgrading the whole system in 2015, so the GPU only needs to perform well until I change it in the system upgrade. At the moment, I don't see any point in buying a super fast GPU (e.g. GTX 780) when I'm going to be running it on a first generation i7 with PCI-e 2.0 - if I spend that kind of money on a GPU, I would want to get the most from it straight away. Really what I am saying is, I want the cheapest option for a card that will last me a couple of years until I upgrade the whole system. But at the same time I would like the card to perform really well (on ultra, or as close as reasonably possible to ultra settings at 1080p) for the latest games currently available (that said, I realise that my old i7 might not be fast enough for that and therefore it could be the limiting factor, potentially making my performance desires impossible).

So, now to conclude my rambling. The cards that are in my thoughts are the GTX 760 or potentially the GTX 770. Really, I'm wondering, given my future upgrade plans, would a GTX 770 get me much over a GTX 760, or would I be wasting my money? Now hear is a final loaded question.... what would you do in my position?

Thanks in advance,

Andrew

By the way, the case the card needs to fit into is a Zalman HD160+ that contains a Noctua NH-C12 SE 14 CPU cooler. Since the machine is a "media" machine, extra points are awarded for a quiet GPU (i.e. much quieter than a 9800GTX - kind of sounds like a vacuum cleaner when it gets going). :)

From what i hear the 770 is way above the 760, but heck, with the price difference you could almost sli 2 760's and get way more performance. Thats what i would do i think.

That's a nice idea, but unfortunately my mother board doesn't support SLI, only Cross-Fire. So with Nvidia, I'm stuck with a one card solution. I guess the question I'm really asking is, will a single HTC 760 be enough for what I want?
