I have a reasonably new (~1 year) Toshiba Satellite whose HDD I am hoping to replace in the near future.

However, with the newer Windows 7 it seems they stopped giving out installation disks and instead have the OS hardcoded into the computer to reinstall when I reformat.

Can someone give me a step by step way in which I could keep my file settings/windows OS etc. and transfer it into a new HDD.

I DO have an External Hard Drive available with i believe 1 TB so if that would help it would be nice.

The faster the technique the better it is for me, also if some files are better off not being retained I would like to know as well.

Thanks in Advance,

Most new laptops give you the option to create your own set of recovery disks (on my own Toshiba laptop, that amounted to four DVDs) which will contain the same software as the recovery partition. This would let you install the factory image on any hard drive.

Many people like to install a "clean" image though, without the factory-installed bloat. You can download a windows 7 image from here

and use the product key on the sticker on the underside of the laptop to activate (you may need to install certain device drivers to get everything working. If you have a flash drive you could visit the Toshiba.com support site and d/l all the drivers for that model in advance).
