Problems after graphics card upgrade

I just upgraded to a GTX 760 from an GeForce 9500 GT. I tried playing Saints Row The Third and let it auto-detect my display settings. I was playing it on medium and with the new card it detected that I could play on ultra. Cool. I played for less than 5 minutes and then my computer shut down and started beeping (continuous 1-second beeps). I started it up again and set the display to high. That worked for a few minutes and then the display just froze.

Any ideas what could be going on here? When it freezes or shuts down, there's a faint burning smell but I can't tell where it's coming from.

One potential problem is that because the new card is almost twice as long as the old one, it extends over the area where the sata cables connect to the motherboard. I used a cable with a 90 degree connector, but the card still sits right on top of it. Could this have anything to do with the freezing/shutting down?

It's an Ultra ULT-LSP750P (750 watt)
I felt some heat which I thought was coming from the CPU, but I guess it could have been the PSU. But 750w should be plenty of power shouldn't it?
The only other components I have connected are an SSD (where the game is installed), a storage harddrive and a DVD drive.

I also checked the fans, but they were all running.

If you can, I'd suggest taking the components out one by one and smelling them, If they are burning the strongest smell will be attached to the faulty component. (They still stink when cool, burning does that).

(I'm assuming you haven't tried that already)

If you can, download a temperature monitoring software to check your temps on the cpu and GPU. I suppose if the TP had baked that could smell slightly burned.

Alright I'm back.

I picked up a tier 2 PSU (Corsair TX750) and I'm getting the same problem, only now we can add BSOD to the mix. I thought maybe the new graphics card is faulty so I put the old one back in and after a few minutes I get BSOD again. So on the off chance that the new PSU is also faulty, I put the old one back in and more BSOD after running fine for a few minutes. Sometimes it's BSOD, sometimes it's a shutdown with the repeating 1-second beeps, sometimes it's a bit of both.

I also installed a temp monitor and all temps are in the 40s.

This is really annoying and frustrating because the computer worked fine before I installed the new graphics card, it just couldn't handle newer games. Now it even fails with the old hardware reinstalled WITHOUT trying to run a game.

Yeah, the burning smell has gone away.
Everything starts up and seems to be running fine but after a few minutes it shuts down or BSOD.
edit: and it shuts down without any kind of warning. It'll be running fine and then it will be off and beeping.

My CPU came with a fan pre-attached. Does that make a difference? Should I still reapply? I think that will mean prying them apart.
