So starting today my Gateway FX 6800-01e won't start up. First of all, I assumed it was the crappy power supply that was in there, but I tried everything I could to see if it was something else. I tried shorting the power and ground pins, etc, but nothing seems to work. Now the motherboard light does come on when I plug it in, but I still suspect it's the power supply that failed and won't allow me to turn my computer on. Was just wondering if I could get some help on what new power supply I should buy. Anything between 500W - 750W will work, I just need something to replace this one. I'm not too knowledgeable on the pins and all that stuff though, so if you guys would be kind enough to find a power supply that would work, that'd be great. I'd prefer to buy off of Newegg by the way. Thanks a ton!

Everything is standard besides added RAM. I also tried booting with no RAM in there and no luck (I don't think that'd make a difference anyway). But just a HD 4850 1GB and the i7 that runs at 2.67GHz core clock (I don't turbo it as I haven't needed to). And basically any ATX12V power supply should work then?

Yep, that Seasonic would be a really good choice. Top of the line quality, 5 year warranty, and enough power to give you some headroom with your system.
I just looked up your PC at Gateway: Very nice.
This PSU should give more then enough power that you can update your video card to a newer version without having to redo the PSU.

Alright, thank you a ton for the help. And would you think that upgrading my system would be a better option than building a new rig? I was considering building a new one with a new 770 and all that jazz, but would you think a PSU upgrade + new video card would be a better option? Considering it is 5 years old, I'm not sure if I would want to do that or just build a new one when I get the money. And just to clarify, I can use any ATX12V power supply from my understanding? Cause I may browse around at some other ones, I just need to know which one I have to use. Again, thank you a ton for the help and it's helped me immensely.

I just helped a friend upgrade his Alienware with an i7-920. He added a Sh@#$%^&oad of RAM (Cause he wanted too, not cause he needed it) and an ASUS 660 (I think it was the TOP version). He games a bit and it still runs everything really nicely.
So my advise is invest your money in a good reputable power supply (Honestly, that Seasonic is a pretty good deal at that price) and that 770 and start saving your money for the new build. I would say your Gateway, with the new PSU and CArd would be good for at least 2 years; then if you rebuilt you could just move the 770 to the new machine until you could afford the next 'biggest and greatest' video card of the future time.
RE. Power Supplies. Yes, any ATX powersupply that supports EATX and Intel power specifications will work. But as you have found out not all power supplies are created equal.
I would only purchase one of the following brands: Seasonic, Corsair, PC Power&Cooling, Antec, XFX. Their PSU's are manufactured by reputable companies.
Here are a couple links to look at:
Johnny Luckys Lemon list:
http://www.johnnylucky.org/power-supplies/psu-lemon-list.html
From Newegg, the "Eggxpert Tiered Power Supply List." This has brands and/or models listed from "Highly recommended" all the way down to NOT RECOMMENDED, DON'T BUY/REPLACE IMMEDIATELY.
http://www.eggxpert.com/forums/thread/323050.aspx
And this site, johnnyguru.com, has an awful lot of reviews you can check out. Really good units all the way to ones that have blown up.

Lastly, a link from the 'component' page of this forum on power supplies

Again, personally, I would go with the Seasonic, but XFX might have better price and they are made by Seasonic.
Good luck.

Alright, a friend of mine brought over his PSU and we tested it, and everything booted perfectly. So it's for sure the power supply causing the issue and I'll be buying a new one today. Thank you a ton for all the help!
