I have a HP Pavillion G6 Laptop with OEM Windows 7 Home Premium that has had a new Mobo installed. The previous owner had been using it for games and had all sorts of stuff installed so I decided to reset to factory settings to clean it up (I have used the option on other laptops before with no problems) but I think that the new Mobo is causing problems and Windows will not start. I can get into the BIOS but not into safe mode etc. and when loading up it says 'preparing your computer for first use' and then an error saying that windows cannot complete the installation. Any ideas?

YEAH, welcome to Windows Licensing. If that is the original HP OEM your trying on the Mobo, but that Mobo is NOT the exact same model as the original laptop came with, then your violating the terms of the License and need to buy a Off the Shelf copy of Windows (which in stores is only Windows 8).

Basically OEM OS copies are tied to that specific hardware, which they pass on the bulk purchase discount into the price of the computer you pay for. Because your getting the OS so cheaply, as compared to full normal price, it is restricted to only that line of hardware from that maker in that specific design. So a Dell copy can't be used on a HP machine, vice versa, even though both are Win7.

windows is not even starting, it would start and fail licensing checks if it was that and run him on a 5 day activation window.

Not necessarily, in my experiances. I have often had different system makers or just specific models from a maker be all fussy about it and do EXACTLY this issue, where it would refuse to do anything at all, because the SETUP executable was programmed to actually scan the hardware first. Like when I accidentally grabbed my HP copy and put it into the Dell, it said specifically I had a illegal copy of Windows OEM and need to contact the manufacturer. No license nothing, it juse immediately said NO WAY! LOL

I was kind of hoping that I would still be able to use the same license as the only reason the Laptop has a new Mobo is that the old one died. Everything else on the laptop is exactly the same

Ok so it seems to have miraculously fixed itself! I went into system restore and tried again to get the error messages that I skipped past first time around so I could post it, and now it's working.... Very strange and I'm sorry for wasting everyone's time, though I'm sure the info you've given will come in handy for me at some point in the future. Thanks guys and have a good day
