Im thinking of overclocking my i7 3770k to about 4 ghz. For video editing.

Using an asrock z77 extreme 4m mobo

My question is, will it reduce the life span of my CPU? if so, by how much .

My 2nd question is , what is safe
overclocking temperatures?

And lastly, if overclocked at safe temperatures, does it kill cpu lifespan ?

Solution
no, since the processor will be around ambient temperature given a degree or two.

it is only the temperatures when the processor is running that make a difference.

and yeah looking at it i reckon it should be fine, as long as the thermal compound is applied properly, people will say to spread but the rice grain method is easier and can cause less problems.

if you lift off the heat sink at anytime clean off the compound and re apply again.

Meaning life span will only be affected if temperature is too high?. Whats the safe temperature ? :) also recommend me a heatsink budget is 100$. Currently im going with tpc 812 from cooler master

looks fine to me, use the rice grain in the middle method rather than spreading and you should be good to go.

decent temps should be anything up to 50 or 60 on load depending on your ambient temp, i have quite cool ambient temps and my cpu even overclocked sticks around 45 and near 50 max

My rooms air conditioned so most of the time when i get back from class ambient temp will be about 21C .

Does ambient temperature affect cpu if the computer is not turned on? Cause my rooms amboent temp is about 28C when im not in

So the tpc 812 would be fine for 4ghz overclock ?
