I have just put together a new system using the components below:- Motherboard - Asus Z87-K, Intel Z87, S 1150, DDR3, SATA III - 6Gb/s. CPU - Intel Core i5 4670, S 1150, Haswell, Quad Core, 3.4GHz, 3.8GHz Turbo, 1200MHz. Memory - 16GB (4x4GB) Corsair DDR3 XMS3, PC3-10666 (1333). Graphics card - 3GB MSI GTX 580 Twin Frozr II. Power supply - 500W Corsair Builder Series CX CP-9020047-UK. Hard drive - 1TB Seagate ST1000DM003 Barracuda 7200.14 SATA 6Gb/s. Optical drive - SAMSUNG SH-224DB/BEBE
The machine started OK and everything seemed fine until I tried to install Windows 8. The install went to 73% then stopped with an 0x80070017 error (corrupted or missing files). I used memtest and checked the memory, then I tried to install Ubuntu Linux. This too crashed with an unspecified system error but I was able to run Ubuntu from the CD. I tested the hard disk and this was reported good and (once I had learned to use the Linux tools!) was able to confirm that I could format the disk, set up partitions and write data to the disk and read it out again. My next step was to remove the graphics card to simplify the system and add in another old hard drive which I knew was working OK. Attempts to install an OS on this drive brought the identical results for both Windows and Linux.
I am not sure where to go from here. Am I missing something obvious? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Alex
