Corrupted hard disk file recovery

Hello!Before two months ago my hard drive went corrupted because of Windows 8 installation.I got a new hard disk and I ask:Is there any way to recover some data from my old HDD?And even format it?Thanks!
also,when Windows 7 attempts to boot up on the old Hard Disk,a Blue screen with UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME error appears.Does that means my harddisk is dead?

To recover some old data you need to mount the old HDD as an external drive on a PC (use a dock or an enclosure to do that). If it can not be accessed on a Windows system, try a Linux-based PC (Ubuntu, for instance). There is also software available that can retrieve files from a damaged disk, just google it.
To format the HDD you'll need to be able to access it, even at a low-level (before the OS starts, if it is seen in BIOS you should be good to go). There, you can use a program like Killdisk (you can create a bootable media to launch Killdisk before the OS).
If the disk is not seen in BIOS, you might need more help than this. Some companies offer data recovery for a price.

Install your os on the new hard drive.
After installation, you should be able to attach the old hard drive to the pc and access files on it.
I doubt that the old hard drive is physically bad.
If all else fails, there are(expensive) services that can recover data from a bad drive.
