Hello,

I built a PC a few years ago and it was my main PC until about a year ago when I built myself a new PC. I let me brother use this old PC when he comes over on weekends and such. The issue is the PC works fine when I use it in my bedroom but as soon as my brother takes it down to the basement the computer will blue screen of death when ever he uses it in pretty much any game. It works fine at the desktop but anything that requires load on the GPU seems to cause it to BSOD. This is very odd since I always bring it back up to my room as soon as he leaves and it works fine for me in games and never BSOD. I do not know what to do I just replaced the regular hard drive with a 128gb SSD and I replaced the ram a few months ago. The only thing I can think of its the PSU or graphics cards.. If anyone has any suggestion please let me know. I have also tested my PC and my brother brings his PC now which works fine in our basement. If anyone can help or can recommend which part I replace next please let me know, I really do not want to waste money on a PSU and find out its the mobo or video cards. Its driving me nuts since the PC works fine in my room. I was thinking it was a voltage issue in my basement but cannot explain why my newer PC and my brothers PC work fine down there.

Also the right when the PC crashes the video cards seem to set there fan speeds to 100% and get really loud then the PC blue screens with an error code I cannot recall at the moment but have googled in the past to no avail.

The PC's specs are as follows:
Processor: I7 930 2.8ghz
ram: 12gb Gskill DDR3 1600mhz tripple channel (3 sticks each 4gb)
Mobo: Gigabyte X58a-ud3r
Video cards: Crossfire ATI 5850's both XFX brand
HD: 128gb Crucial m4 SSD and a few 500gb seagate drives for storage.
PSU: Xion 800w PSU "off brand PSU I got at microcenter"
If any other specs are needed please let me know.

Solution
1. It could be a problem with the power source in the basement.
2. If the basement ambient temperature is hotter than your room, you could have a heat issue. The fan at 100% is an indicator of a heat issue. Take the sides of the case off and direct a house fan at the insides to see if that helps.
3. XION is a tier 5(not recommended, replace asap) unit on this list: http://www.eggxpert.com/forums/thread/323050.aspx
You could try swapping your psu and see if the box still fails in the basement.
4. Try running with only 5850. Then, the other. Perhaps there is a 5850 problem.

Thanks, I have tried running 1 card a time before forgot to mention that it still occurs. Also it is much cooler in the basement that my room but regardless ill try. Another issue ive noticed is there is a lot of static in my basement especially near our media center area. Still no clue why only this specific computer is effected and not others but I will try to get a replacement PSU and see if that helps.

I would say its mostly really dry in my basement, I constantly get static shock when I go up to turn the TV on or cable box down there. I still don't get it tho as my brothers rig and my other rig work fine down there. Think the Xion PSU could be so bad it is affected by this static/dryness?

Thanks guys,

I ended up replacing the Xion PSU with an EVGA 750w 80+ gold I picked up at Microcenter for $80 after rebate. So far the PC is working a lot better and hasnt crashed since. So hopefully that is the issue, I still need to make sure its working 100% though and I havent just been getting lucky.

It did end up being the power supply but I cannot pick myself as the best solution. If someone else finds this post it was indeed the PSU that needed replacing.
