How can I set up a TV and a Monitor on my computer?

I recently moved my Dell Inspiron into a new room with a Samsung Plasma screen TV. I enjoy playing games on my computer, but also use it for general functions such as browsing/email. Since I am in this position, I would love to be able to take the advantage of Steam Big Picture to play games such as Borderlands 2 on my TV, while still being able to sit at my desk and browse/check email on my older Dell monitor. My PC has a AMD Radeon 7750 in it, which has both a dvi and HDMI port built in. I have tried plugging both my monitor and TV in simultaneously, which results in the monitor showing a blank black screen, and the TV showing my desktop. To switch between them is a pain, as I have to crawl under my desk and switch the cables every time. I have a few ideas on how I could set this up, but as I am by no means a tech mogul, I have no idea where to start/how to execute my ideas.

First off, I have seen people set up dual monitors in such a way that one can show A game in full screen, while the other shows the desktop. How applicable is that to my situation? (I have AMD catalyst controls which has some tools for dual monitors)

Secondly, my CPU has integrated graphics that I disabled when i upgraded to a graphics card. Would it be possible to use my Integrated graphics with my monitor and Graphics card with my PC simultaneously?

Third, I could just set them up to be dual monitors, but how would I do so without my monitor showing a black screen? (I should point out my monitor is from around 2002, only has VGA and DVI ports, and only shows up to 720p.)

Any feedback or other solutions would be appreciated!

when you connect two monitor with your graphic card..say one with DVI and other with HDMI..(in your case VGA and DVI..)
then open the CATALYST control centre...go in desktop management then open the first selection saying CREATING AND ARRAGING DESKTOP....(I have latest catalyst installed which is ver 13.4..so i am telling according to that)

there you can find detect display..if you have connected both monitor properly then you can see 2 display detected..then you can use any of them as primary display..or you can clone the display so same screen appear in both monitor..you did not have to change the cable evry time just switch the monitor as primary display by just click so you can use any of them as you wish.

hope it helps....

Thanks! That helps, however I have two questions/problems.

1. When I switch my TV to be the main display, the resolution of the monitor stays the same, and the TV looks non-HD and some of the desktop is cut off. Can I set them to display at different resolutions, or better yet, can I just opt to turn off one display and keep the other on, with the resolution automatically switching? (eg. I disable my monitor, and the resolution automatically switches to fit my TV.)

2. Would it be possible to have games and other things running on the TV, while still displaying the desktop on the computer? Could I somehow get steam big picture to launch on only the TV while the monitor stays at the desktop?

Thanks!

ok if you duplicate the display then same screen appear in both monitor & it will set at resolution of your primary monitor..as i don't know what kind of tv you have but if it support full hd i mean if it support 1920*1080 resolution then you can set it..to do so set your tv as primary display..

then again open your catalyst control center..there in desktop management section >>there will be another option of desktop property From there you can change resolution up to what your primary display supports...( as you wanted to be your plasma tv)you can use both monitor at same time with same resolution applied in both monitor...(via duplicate display)..or you can switch between them as primary display then your other monitor will only show desktop without icons......you can switch them any time.....and once you have selected resolution for your both monitor it will remain same..i mean to say when you switch between display it will automatically adjust according what you have set in CCC(catalyst control center) so your problem will not there you can see HD display on your plasma tv...

hope it helps..
