Just completed my new buind with an i7-4770K. I am using the Hyper 212 Evo cooler. The cooler slid around and turned a lot while I was trying to install it. I just started stress testing using the large FFT test in Prime95. I stopped it after 20 minutes because the CPU temperatures were climbing into the 70's. I have the Antec 900 case with a 200mm fan above the CPU running at 750 RPM, as well as a 120mm fan on the rear of the case running at 1500 RPM. The air coming out of the case fans was cool. In fact, the cooler itself was not really warm. The CPU is at stock clock.

Is this normal?

EDIT: Also, one of the CPU cores was consistently 5-10 C cooler than the others. Does this indicate a problem?

Those temperatures are normal.

One core is less hot because it is not doing any of the calculations, or it's just not getting loaded as heavily. Despite what everyone thinks, your cores often go unused.

If your CPU gets up to 100, then you have an issue. However, it is designed to shut off once it hits the max safe temperature. I have had plenty of my servers hammering away at close to 100 without any problem. They aren't thermally designed any differently than your CPU. You're good.
