My friend's building a very high end PC, he has thousands to put on it. I would like to know a good 1150 motherboard, one at the top which will suit an i7 and high end GPU.

The Asus RoG branded boards are generally regarded as being the king of the hill as far as enthusiast boards go. There's nothing wrong with the top end Gigabyte or MSI boards, but its the RoG boards that are typically used to smash overclocking records.

The one complaint that I do have about high end motherboards from other vendors is that they often include too many bells and whistles which just act as potential points of failure when trying to squeeze extra performance out of the board.

If you really need two NICs and a dozen USB ports, go with the Gigabyte Force. If you don't, go with the Maximus VI Extreme.

Expensive doesn't mean good. If your friend has money to burn, go with a socket 2011 based machine. If he wants mid-range "mainstream" he can stick with the 1150 platform. Sure, you can OC it and you can get a OK processor (the 4770K) but for someone who wants the best, and has the cash for it, you want to go with a Enthusiast level of performance, and that at the moment is 2011. Rumour is they are getting Ivy Bridge - E by years end so I would wait until then.

He has over £6000 but I don't think he wants to literally buy things like the i7 extreme when he doesn't need them. I will keep all options open though.

At the moment I need to know the best 1150 board.
