I currently have 8 g of memory but need more for running virtual machines. Is there a way to upgrade to 16gig. I know the processor can handle it, but when I look on memory upgrade sites, 8gig is the max listed for this machine.

No, 16GB is not recommended and probably won't work either. Officially Hp recommends upto 8GB. If you wanna give it a shot then you can do so at your risk. For running VM's try getting a workstation (desktop)

I know that I can buy 8gig memory module of the same type as what is currently in the machine (PC3-10600 DDR3 SODIMM 204-Pin).

I am looking for some actual expertise! Does anyone know for sure if the machine will recognize the additional 8gigs?

Care to share the specifications of the modules you used for your memory upgrade?
