Solution
Both are as good as each other. 144z means better refresh rate than 60Hz which results in better fluidity of motion. This wont have a massive effect on quality however if you have vsync turned [ON] then you can play at a constant 144FPS.

If you have a graphics card that can performs upto resolution of 1440p then get that as your gaming experience will be better.

I personally like a monitor which could perform at higher resolutions.

A 1080p 144hz monitor and a 60hz 1440p both would use about the same amount of resources. I would go with the 1440p out of the two, assuming you have a beefy enough system, and that the one you picked out is an IPS panel with no more than a 5ms response time.

What I want for an upgrade personally is one of the new superwide monitors like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824005396

That is an IPS panel, 2560x1080 screen resolution, meaning you get more peripheral vision in games without adding more monitors to the sides.
