Which sound card and headphones should I get

I want to get really good sound, I don't want to spend over 250 for both the card and the headset. Do I even need a sound card for the best sound, can I get just as good sound USB? Or does a sound card really add a lot to the sound quality? As far as the headphones go I really want something with defined surround sound and a good bass

it realy depends on how much you care while a good soundcard will make a difrences it is by no means nessasary and the headphones it depends on wether you prefer a more accurate sound, or a exciting sound or a more base heavy sound

well, it is simple - good headphones make more impact than a good sound card, but any decent headphones are useless without good sound card and even the best sound card on the planet won't help you much without decent headphones.

and keep in mind that headsets usually suck. most of them do - some more, some less and some /read. all nearly ALL USB headsets/ suck to the extremes... and also, virtual surround is a gimmick - any decent sound card can do better.
so, if I can get you an advice - get some decent headphones and pair them with a cheap clip-on microphone.

Thank you, yeah, I have a surround sound speaker setup right now but that won't really be an option when I move in with a roommate in a month and want to play games until 5 am haha. But do you know of any real 5.1 or even 7.1 headphones that you could recommend? And what soundcard should I pair with it? maybe the sound blaster zx?

7.1 heahones are. Wast much worse sound quality I would get something like the ASUS xonar dgx And a nice pair of headphones but for headphone recommendation I need to know what type of sound you like from headphones and speakers

I like obvious surround sound, like hearing things behind me and all around me. I also like decent bass. So basically a surround sound speaker system but on my head haha
