Worth the cost?

I currently have an MSI 990FXA-GD80 Board with an AMD FX-8350 Vishera 4.0 Processor.
I have been looking at switching out to Intel, possibly the i5-4670K, and since I need a new motherboard anyway, to put in for a nice one.

I currently have nearly $400 invested (over time) in the current board and cpu, the cost to upgrade would be about $430.

Question is, would that be worth the investment? Should I sell my Vishera for an i5, or am I better off staying where I am and saving my money for the next big item to come along?

Almost anything 'Hi End' you buy will last 4- 5 years performance wise.
I certainly wouldnt buy another board until it was knackered.
If it is, early, find out why.
I have a few 'mates ' who have had intel socket boards die on them, mainly asus . I dont know why as they 'were' the best but I wouldnt trust them now (btw i have an lga775 asus board here that was fubar from new?)
If your board is finished, buy an intel socket gigabyte. I wouldnt trust MSI, cos they tweaked gpu boards with naughty circuits.
Just my two penn'orth.

What CPU intensive task is pushing you into making such a purchase?

If throwing away $400 to spend another $400+ for a 25% performance interests you than switch..
Don't forget you will have to re install your OS and star completely over which is always fun, not worth the money or hassle for +25% IMHO.

I feel foolish to forget to say that this would be primarily for gaming. My favorite game has been RIFT, and I have noticed that my performance is not where I want it to be.

Current setup is an EVGA 670 signature, 16 gigs ram, ssd for main game and os, yet I still get stutters in gaming and in daily tasks. There is a possibility if I have a hiccup in my install.
Part of my desire is simply to have the best I can afford, just because, and also because I hear Intel does the best with gaming. I can sell what I have or use it to build computers for friends, so the parts will have use if upgraded.
