I'm currently using Xfinity with a SMCD3GNV modem, the modem is great when wired, I usually have no issues. But ever since I've gotten this thing the wifi has been TERRIBLE, it cuts in and out and it gives you a very low download speed. I've seen the solution to this issue where you disable WMM and QoS support, but on my gateway I have no option to do that, other SMCD3GNVs I've seen have the option to disable the support but I have no idea why my layout for my gateway is so different. Usually I get around 50+ mbps wired, on wifi I get around 3 mbps and I can't play any games (Get packet loss) and browsing the web is extremely slow.

EDIT: Also I get a regular upload speed but a terrible download speed.

Solution

you need a good AC/a/b/g/n for both speed and strong signal coverage ... cheap wifi dont work well , I recommend Asus Routers and Router/modes for signal strength and coverage

You need to contact CC and have them either do a firmware update and or replace it. My SMC does 30D and 10Up wireless and I play GTA5 and my fiancé watches HD streaming while her father play games/videos and does other browsing activities!

as for the weak wifi in these boxes. Hardware wise it has a "N" networking card and gigabit lan. Not "weak" by anymeans. it only has one Antenna though. so its range is affected. may range out of min was 125FT w/o issue. got 200 but that was dead line of sight. as for a new router, You can if you want to spend money on it. tis up to you.
