FX 8350 Vs. I7

I've been looking around and found varying bench marking charts and trying to figure out the best CPU for my needs. The primary focus of this machine will be to encode/transcode DVDs & Blu Ray (3000 + titles) to H.264 and maybe down the road, H.265. I typically run high settings in Handbrake, on the Placebo setting. My current Q9400 takes between 11 & 20 hours depending on the source. Out of curiosity, how much would either of these processors improve my times? I know for something like this, a duel Xeon set-up would be ideal, but I dont have the funds for that. I would like to keep the build at $700 or less. I am not a PC gamer, however, once in a blue moon I might install a game. I am hesitant to completely exclude gaming, as I love to game on a console. With this, which CPU would better accomplish my needs? Which would be faster? I was thinking the 3770k or 4770k for the I7, unless a better option exists.

Buy an un threaded quad intel, but concentrate your funds on a rock solid pair of cuda enabled graphics cards. These will mincemeat handbrake type apps.
Some will argue amd cards, but I have one and am sick of 'Your display driver crashed and has recovered'.

In fact, just buy a whopping great nvidia card for your current pc.
Check out a gtx 760's (and others) handbreak benchmarks for your own satisfactions. A q9400 is still a good all round cpu.( i believe its 2x a e7400)

Could you give Ijay some benchmarks for handbrake ; q9400 + gtx760 vs the modern quad and gtx760? As my understanding goes, the cuda chunk of processing would be so large as to make buying a new board and chip rather wasteful, moneywise.

No, I mean he is wanting to upgrade to use handbrake, but handbrake can be cuda accelerated, meaning a gtx760 would cut the times down to a third or so, so what would the benchmark times be if he bought a new quad? My understanding is not as great as just adding the whopping gpu.

U can overclock this to 4.5 to get better results than a 8350

Handbrake doesn't use CUDA, it uses OpenCL. As for nVIDIA driver crashes...

Now what does Handbrake use? Well a BETA version uses OpenCL and and is available here. Handbrake can also make use of QuickSync as this build does here.

I'd try for an Intel Quadcore CPU with a Z87 based motherboard and a Radeon HD 7870 or if that is too expensive opt for an AMD FX-8350/Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 motherboard with a nice Radeon HD 7870 2GB. Not as a gaming GPU (though it can definitely deliver in that dept) but as an OpenCL accelerator for your video transcoding.

Oh and I made a post about Handbrake earlier today seeing as I use my PC for pretty much the same things you do. You can see it here. Just two screenshots of Handbrake comparing an AMD FX-6300 and an Intel Core i7-3930K. As you'll see even an FX-6300 can obtain decent performance in Handbrake. Heck it gives the 3930K a run for it's money. (FX-6300 ~ $110 and 3930K ~$600).

Ok. I cant nail down handbrake, but in several other render/video benchmarks i have seen a gtx 760 beats any intel quad by half the time. So, that would be the way to go. . Buy the card, stuff it in, drivers, run any cuda acceleratable app and windows will say 'do you want nvidia to handle that?'Yes? Sorted! No new board, ram, chip, just tripple the power you have now. Wait till they drop to £175

So a gtx760 cant accelerate open cl then?
Dont think I am being rude, I wouldnt know? But as for nvidia driver crashes; ten yrs. . Invidia NIL ati several 100, in the last yr.

I am not an expert by any means, but from all the information I could find, it seemed the CPU is close to the sole factor in Handbrake. As chriss000 asked, can Handbrake be accelerated by open cl and a decent video card? I know both chips overclock well, and I was going to get an H100i to give that a go. I just thought that 8 cores running @ full load would have to have some kind of advantage against Intel's 4 (albeit more efficient) cores when running at close to the same speed. However, the best I can seem to find is that depending on the pass, one or the other comes out just a little bit ahead. I just the Constant Quality Slider, 1 pass, variable frame rate, and placebo settings in Handbrake. If overclocked to about the same speed, would an I7 see any speed increase over an I5? A good I5 K can be had for about $200, so that makes it attractive as well. Thank you to all that have helped so far! I am just trying to nail down the best cpu for the job. It seems the high-end Haswell is king of everything, but it'll run 600-700 easily for one and a decent board + closed loop cooling solution.

nVIDIA has shoddy OpenCL drivers compared to AMD as well as the fact that AMDs GPU designs are more powerful than nVIDIAs GPU designs in terms of computational capabilities. As for driver crashes either you had a bad card (hardware wise), your case was not properly ventilated (causing an overheat) or you're making it up (not being rude just pointing out some possibilities).

Running a 7790 for F@H I would dispute that as this card cannot do two things at once whereas an Nvidia card can,and if it's not the card then it's the drivers!

Yeah you can blame the piss poor programming job on the AMD client by Stanford University for that. I mean the AMD client has always been neglected due to it being based on the complicated and poor performing BrookGPU programming language and compiler/runtime back in the day. The OpenCL client took forever to release and not much attention has been paid to it as Stanford had already invested so much into CUDA.

I can mine BTC all day on an AMD card and use the desktop. You can run various OpenCL apps and still use the PC without a problem.
 


Actually I'm more inclined to blame AMD for the piss poor perforamnce of their card and drivers as the F@H client is the same for both Nvidia and AMD but with an Nvidia card I can watch telly whilst folding and I don't have artifacts all over my browser window like I get with this AMD card.
