Hey all. I've decided to keep my i7 920 at 3.8 ghz until probably skylake comes out but my GTX 285 is in need of replacement.

I have it narrowed down to either the non reference cooler msi/evga gtx 760 or 770. My man goal is to play BF4 on ultra. I'm really just buying it to tide me over until maxwell comes so I'd rather buy the GTX 760 since I plan to replace it in a year or so. However, I'm afraid the GTX 760 won't play BF4 on ultra, based on mostly speculation on the Internet and the fact that reviews seems to show the 760 barely getting over 60fps in BF3 on ultra. So between the two can I get away with the gtx 760 and have it last me until maxwell while maxing out current games or should I suck it up and get the 770 to ensure max settings for the next year or so? The OC capabilities of both cards appear quite significant and an OCed 760 can get close to a reference 770.

In short is the 770 worth the 150+ premium over the 760 for upcoming games? I would rather put the extra toward an SSD if I not.

Edit: I run a single 1920x1200 monitor and have no plans of upgrading until it gets cheaper for 1440p. Sorry totally forgot to include this initially.

Solution
If your main focus is battlefield 4 you would probably be better served with AMDs new cards coming out in October.

Why:
1.) BF4 is a DirectX 11.1 game which AMD fully supports and Nvidia doesn't. From what I understand this can provide a significant performance increase as DirectX 11.1 has a much lower memory utilization.

2.) There are strong rumors that BF4 will be packaged for FREE in a AMD Never Settle Bundle with some of their Next Gen Cards this October

3. I believe BF4 is an AMD Gaming evolved sponsored game meaning the back-end coding will be optimized for AMD cards.

Even if you go with Nvidia it would be better waiting until October for AMD's next gen cards as it will push Nvidia's prices down...

Ha I realized just a couple min ago I should put my Resolution in the post and you had already responded :). But as I added to the first post I only have a single 1920x1200 monitor and I currently play BF3, Far Cry 3, Tomb Raider, BL2, skyrim and civ 5. I think the 760 can handle the current games I'm more concerned with the next gen watch dogs, BF4 etc.

Hm that is interesting I did not realize that. Unfortunately I have no plans of upgrading to windows 8 in the next year from my 30 dollar full retail windows 7 pro 64(being a university student has its perks) I've been using for years now so the features would be moot until then. Also I am really looking to get it now since I could stand to benefit in current games I play like bf3 and farcry.

I thought of something that might be the best solution. If I ensure to buy evga I could buy the gtx 760, and after bf4 comes out in October which is within the 90 day period I could upgrade to the 770 if the 760 isn't to par with what I wanted performance wise. Is this a reasonable solution or am I missing something?
