hey guys i would like to overclock my asus hd7850 for the first time but i only have a Seasonic S12II 520w psu. i was hoping that someone could tell me some safe overclocks that i could set and give me some tips for my first time overclocking. i am also running an i5 3470 if you need that information. thanks.

Solution
The 7850 should clock safely to 1.1ghz, 1ghz if you're very cautious. I would say hitting 1ghz should be possible on almost every 7850.

With the Seasonic and the i5 3470, you should be fine for power even on high OC

Use a program like Sapphire Trixx as Trixx allows a higher OC limit (AMD Overdrive limits your OC to 1050mhz.

What you want to do is to increase powertune to +20%. Then raise your GPU clock speed by 50mhz and then run a intensive game or some sort of graphics benchmark like 3dmark. Furmark is too intense IMO. Keep doing this until it crashes then back it off by 50mhz. You can also stop when feel like you've gone far enough. Be sure to keep an eye on your load temps. Keep them below 80c load would be best.

You can tweak...

You can tweak the voltage if you're adventurous but a 1ghz OC shouldn't require a voltage tweak

Trixx was the only GPU overclocking tool that I found with a OC cap over 1050, I believe it's at 1250 but I don't recommend going near that. I'd aim for more of a 1150 core clock and 1300 or 1350 memory clock. There are some people I've seen people at 1350MHz core clock and over 1500 memory clock, though I don't recommend attempting that.

You've got plenty of power on the Seasonic and its a good quality unit. Your 7850 and 3470 won't draw anything near the limit of your PSU. Your PSu should be able to output 40 amps X 12v = 480W which is more than enough. My sig rig CX600 only gives out a bit more Watts on the 12v rail and I got my 7850 and i5 both OC

The Powercolor 7850 here is clocked at 1ghz from the factory. Expect your 7850 @ 1ghz to use a bit more power.

Your 3470 at peak load should draw under 80W and 120 for GPu uses 200W, so you got 280W left over for mb + HDD's + fans etc
