I recently got a second monitor for my gaming computer. The graphics card is a radeon hd 7770 I know it supports 2 monitors. The graphics card has 1 DVI slot, 1 HDMI slot and 1 that I am not sure. Looks bigger than HDMI but sill rectangular. I bought a cable off a friend that was HDMI to DVI. The monitor only takes VGA so I bought an adapter that was DVI to VGA. When I plug it in, it doesn't work. The monitor has been used as an external monitor for at least a year but to a computer that has a VGA slot. My computer doesn't have one. Do I have to buy a VGA to HDMI adapter or can I do something? Windows does not detect the monitor at all. On the monitor, it says it is in sleep mode. Press any button to wake up. So the monitor detects being plugged in, but the computer doesn't detect the computer.

Quick update: I managed to get the computer to detect the monitor by switching the cables. My main monitor is now using the hdmi to dvi cable and the second screen is using my old DVI cable using the adapter. The monitor is now detected, but still says it is in sleep mode. I have tried changing all the settings, extend, duplicate, second only, turning of my main screen. Nothing works. I tested it with a laptop I have that has a vga slot and it worked. I guess this means the adapter is broken or not working. I don't understand why it detects it but not displays it.

Solution
I just found out why it is not working. I need a DVI-I cable or DVI-A because the adapter need to convert the image into analogue. The adapter cannot do that because both the cables I am using are DVI-D. I will need to order a HDMI to VGA to use instead.
