Pc shuts down while playing games

Hi there,

Thanks for reading in advance.

Like said in the TT i can't play games for a long time without problems.
The screen starts to flicker, a high pitch noise comes out of the speakers and the computer automaticly restarts.

Also, when benchmarking in 3dMark the same thing happens after only a couple of minutes.

Specs
DualCore Intel Core 2 Duo E8200, 2666MHz
Acer MCP73PV moederbord
4GB RAM DDR2 SDRAM (2x2)
nVidia GeForce GTX 550 Ti (3072mb)
Recom Power Engine Plus 600W

Things i've already tried
- Cleaning fans
- Memory test
- Harddisk test
- GPU drivers (reinstalled etc.)

When running on the onboard videocard (on the motherboard), it doesn't have any problems. So you would say it's the GPU GTX 550 Ti.

But, could it be that the PSU is the problem?

It could be the power supply is failing.
Or.. Have you logged your GPU temps while you are playing? How high does it get before it crashs.

My first suspects would be whether or not you've overclocked any of your components or if not I'd look at as the previous poster said power failings.

Try running a CPU stress test like Intel Burner just to eliminate that it is not a game specific issue but one of increased performance demand.

If it passes that try Valley or Heaven GPU test.

That could help you isolate the failure if it is component specific? if it does it on both then a power issue would be my first diagnosis.

after browsing a bit I'm inclined to say that it is the power supply.
(even before I browse but I wanted to give it a fair chance)

if the memory tested with no problems (my first clue) chances are that the power supply is not giving enough power to your video card and the
whole system is taking a hit because of this.

also notice that CPU is pretty old (2008) that's 5 years and in computer terms.... a dinosaur.
what I mean is that you need to consider any expense vs simply building a new one.... this time with a superior power supply, this is the most important part as it will feed electricity to all your components.

I would also verify that ALL of your drivers are up to date including motherboard, and sound drivers. Its not unheard of that even old sound drivers can crash a computer mid-game.

Hi,

I had a very similar problem when i first built my computer, i could play a game for around 30 minutes before the computer would restart itself. The culprit turned out to be the PSU. I replaced the PSU with a corsair HX1000w and it has worked perfectly ever since. I believe the reason your onboard graphics is able to work fine is due to the much decreased power draw on the PSU compared to the GTX550, and consequently it does not cause the PSU to overheat. If possible try another PSU of similar wattage and see if that makes a difference.

Well, first i tested the CPU with CPU Burn in. No troubleshoots at all.
After this i tested the GPU with Furmark and 3dMark. Now they both freeze at exacly 70 degrees celcius.
It did not shut down but it showed a message from Windows that the nvidia kernel mode driver crashed???

Well done on the trouble shoot, what I suspected was true and at least you've managed to isolate the failure before you start ripping apart your PC.

A GPU should easily hit 70c without issue, have you searched for a driver solution or looked up if this "overheat" failure is common?

Yesterday i've tried a differend PSU(Corsair). Unfortunaly this didn't solve the problem...

Didn't mention this before but while gaming, it shows graphical artifacts and flickering bright colors before freezing.
After that it will reboot OR return to destktop.

I'm out of ideas

different brand doesn't mean much without the model, we need the specs you know...

You've already isolated that its a GPU issue, its either got bad drivers or defective.

Its hitting 70c then screwing up, its a bad GPU unfortunately.

You know this from your performance testing, CPU was fine, you only had GPU failure.

Your right yes.

I just removed the Nvidia Drivers along with the Physics. After this i ran Driver Sweeper in safe mode to be sure everything was gone.
I installed driver version 285.62 from the official Nvidia site.
Tried to play Dishonored for a while. But after only a staggering 5 minutes the screen flickered, froze and the annoying noise played for a few seconds. Then it al turned black so i was forced to reboot .

Wondering if there is anything else i can do

I'm afraid i don't have anything of that lol.
Oh well, maybe the local computershop can take a look at it.

Well then, i put the stripped GPU in the oven for like 9 minutes on 200 degrees.
After reinstalling it seemed to work properly at first sight. No errors for the first 15 minutes.
But shortly after it gave me all the usual errors. Freezing, the noise and the kernel error (sometimes auto reboot).

So i guess this means i have to buy atleast a new GPU.

Or anyone else must have some kind of solution
