is it worth it to buy Phenom II now for future gaming?

I am considering just upgrading my CPU at this time and buy a Phenom II there is a 960T on Amazong for 119. Is it better than the one listed in the best gaming CPUs for the money for July on this site? Also is it worth it now to upgrade? will i see a worthwhile performance boost in gaming? i always play with everything max as much as I can on a 1600x900 res. Or should i just wait till next year and upgrade my mobo with a FX processor and DDR3?

For future gaming? no. The phenom II is quite old now. I'd say you'd be better off with an FX 6300 and a 970 or 990fx mobo. If you get a good 970 you'd be able to overclock over 4.0 ghz (make sure it has 8+2 power phases, rare in the 970 chipsets but they do exist)

i planned on getting a SLI compatible AM3+ board so i can SLI my Boost and add DDR3 i just wasnt sure if it would make much difference going with a FX processor over the Phenom for future gaming but I guess it would make more sense to just get the newer processor next year.

honestly, the 6300 would be a great choice. There is nothing to indicate a steamroller FX chip coming next year so don't think that it will happen for sure. AMD Makes server processors first then creates consumer cpus based on the server cpus. The FX Line has come from the Opteron line and there is no Opteron steamroller chip on AMD's roadmaps. There is a Vishera refresh which would be the same as Richland which doesn't have that much of an increase over Vishra at all (a few tweaks but nothing that would show up in gaming performance)

If you'd rather wait until next year to be absolutely sure then by all means, however I highly doubt anything worth waiting for is coming out in the next 12 months.

well i will have to wait till next year anyway to get a FX processor since i would need to upgrade my mobo and DDR3 to go with it thats why i was wondering about the Phenom II i could get that today and just put it in and use it now but i think it would be better to just wait.
