Im having an issue with about 5 (More to come!) XP Optiplex 740 Machines.

I restore 3 with a Dell XP SP3 disc and all 3 are having issues updating. Everytime I go to update the SVHOST jumps to 99% CPU usage, Ive tried a few fixes online but nothing works.... well.

My current game plan is to kill the SVHOST process, update to IE 8, restart, Turn SVHOST back on and repeat until the updates take. This can sometimes take a while...

I have about 5 more computers to restore and updating is taking up too much of my time. Ive swapped XP install Discs but for some reason the SP3 Dell discs all have this issue, and these are all the same Model of OptiPlex 740.

Has anyone run into this before?

well, after a few years in the biz of computer helpdesk I have come to the conclusion that processes are going to take as long as they damn well please and there's not much I can do to make em go faster. I find that this mindset cuts down on my gray hairs, my drinking, and my smoking. As an added bonus it lets me sometimes deal with obnoxious people after a day at work.

Could be that the Dell disc is missing data that a regular OEM disc has. Usually service host process runs high on cpu % when there are a lot of updates to do. Have you tried running the Windows Update utility? I prefer to do that rather than let the service host try to take care of it in the background.
