I've recently found an Nvidia EVGA 690 on Ebay for $679, though I'm wondering if I should just get an 780 for $650 instead.

The 690 is more powerful, but that I would not recommend since it is actually two 680's in SLI. And the performance difference between a 690 and 780 is not that much.

So go for the 780 as it is a Single GPU card which should not give you any problems at all. And also it is going to run like a beast in any game you throw at it at everything maxed out and would not give you problem

Also the 780 has a very big advantage over the 690 which is you can SLI another 780 if you ever need more performance (which is very unlikely), but you cannot do the same with a 690 without issues.

So, I would say get a 780 which is much better for that price, not essentially on the performance front but on the reliability as it would play any games without any problems caused by the SLI while the same could be happened by a 690 as it is dual GPU.

I hope this answer helps. What else can I help you in? I would be happy to help :)

If your planning on running high res and are not taking prisoners with the FPS I'd go with the 690.

If you want something newly released and your running your average 1080p set up then the 780 will likely be enough to give you whatever you need.

The GTX 690 is a beast though, I'd be too tempted for the same price.

Also, I forgot to mention, the 690 sucks a lot of power, so you might need to bump up your PSU since it is basically two 680's in SLI. So atleast a 750W PSU should be the one for the 690 (including a 100W margin of course.)

Just get a 780. It is an awesome card. I would have personally took a 780 out of those two.

I'm a little surprised that so many are suggesting a $650 GTX 780 over a GTX 690 for $30 more! And suggestions like a pair of GTX 770's in SLI for $800-$900, when the performance will be nearly identical to the GTX 690 is a little off (sorry Jack). To pay $679 for a GTX 690 is outstanding.

The GTX 690 is, bar none, the fastest single video card you can buy. It regularly sells for $1000 or more. The difference in performance for a GTX 690 over a GTX 780 is about 26%, or about 13% over one of the factory overclocked 780's, like the EVGA SC. So for virtually the same price as a GTX 780, you get a much higher performance level.

So I'm not the only one? was beginning to wonder.

Good luck dealing with Micro Stuttering and skipped frames which ruins the gaming experience for me. I know with Nvidia it is not so much but there is no point getting skipped frames when you are paying so much.

I would still stick to what I suggested earlier. I know the 690 is more powerful, but the 780 is a very good card and 95 percent of the people would never need more power than that and also it does not have any issues of going dual GPU (which the SLI has). The 690 is basically two 680's in SLI.

TBF to the OP I think he should have a 3rd party direct from the Nvidia help forums view of this subject.

I personally have never owned a 690 so I think ultimately you should take the advice/ view of other 690 users as they have first hand experience ...........

https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/543031/gtx-690...

Hmmmm I'm a "No issues" type of guy so in light of this I have to reneg, unless your confident you can make adjustments for any issues you may encounter and do what these 690 users did to solve any problems I'm going to change tact and recommend the GTX 780.

Maybe consider opening up a thread here directly asking for the advice of other GTX 690 users and see what they recommend?
