I've completed my first home-built computer and I can't get any POST or display.

ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0 Motherboard
AMD Phenom II X4 965 CPU
XFX 7870 HD Double-D GPU
Kingston HyperX Genesis RAM (2x4GB)
Cooler Master eXtreme 600W PSU

I've tested everything except the CPU (because I don't have anyone with an AM3+ socket to test it) and it all works. The motherboard is currently on RMA with ASUS because everyone is telling me that it's the problem. I was wondering if the CPU could be the problem but a buddy who knows far more than I do said that if the CPU is bad then none of the fans on any of the devices would run either.

Currently, I get power to the mobo and the fans on the case/CPU/GPU/PSU all run, but I get no POST beeps and nothing on the display. There's no on-board graphics, so this all comes out of the GPU which has been tested and works fine.

Your thoughts? Could the CPU be the problem or is it more likely the motherboard?

First off, not to be rude, but your friend is wrong. If the CPU is bad then your fans will still run no problem. The CPU simply doesn't regulate voltage to the system components. That is for the Mobo and PSU to hash out.

Without a CPU (or a bad CPU) your system will NOT boot. It will not POST therefor meaning you will not hear any beep codes. It will fire up the system and all connected components but you won't get a display.

My money is on the CPU and/or Motherboard.

Test another working CPU and Motherboard and let us know. You must test both if you can.

I don't think you're rude, no worries.

The mobo has already been RMA'd once through tigerdirect and they sent me a totally new one. Now it's on RMA again, but with ASUS this time, so they can test and repair it if necessary. Depending on what they tell me I guess I may have to RMA the CPU as well.
