The play and charge should charge when connected to the PC. It will not, however, send data over the charging cable.
send data over the charging cable you mean it cant be used to connect the controller? also how would you compare the kit to getting rechargeable batteries instead. i want to get which ever suits best
You cannot just connect a play and charge cable to your PC and use the controller like you would on an Xbox 360. The play and charge only actually charges the controller, even on an Xbox. The controllers actually send data using a proprietary system created by Microsoft. Using a Xbox 360 controller on a PC requires a receiver that is compatible with Microsoft's system. Microsoft will gladly sell you one; they run about $20, with other brands selling their own for less. When you said you had a receiver, I assumed this was what you meant.
So, in short, hooking the play and charge to the PC will only allow charging. To actually use the controller, you require a receiver. The play and charge generally works well, but if you are going to play with a cable running to your controller, why not get a wired controller?
As for the batteries, either option will work. I would personally get the play and charge, and not from GameStop. I worked there, I've seen the mark-ups they run.
Amazon has it for $18 and some change.
